The Summer of 1993

Spain / 2017 / 96'
Film, 10+

It is the summer of 1993. Following the death of her parents, 6-year-old Frida moves from Barcelona to the Catalan countryside to live with her aunt and uncle. Her new home is surrounded in mysterious and enchanting nature calling her to explore. Frida’s cousin, Anna, also lives there. Anna has now become Frida’s younger sister, whom Frida must now take care of. The family is doing what it can to achieve a fragile new balance and bring life back to normal: they cook, swim in the pool, listen to jazz music in the garden – they do anything that can bring them moments of happiness. Frida comes to slowly realise that she does not need to run away, that she can stay and adapt to the new environment. The girl needs to cope with her emotions and teach her new parents to love her as their own daughter. The film is a touching intimate confession of the director’s childhood.

Carla Simón on The Summer of 1993: “I have told my story so many times, and because of that, it kind of turned into a legend, into something that happened to me, but at the same time, it feels like a tale /… / We decided to put the camera in one place and shoot very simple sequence shoots that could let the actors act the whole scene – or almost the whole scene – without noticing the camera too much. This was great when it worked, because they could let themselves go into the scene and feel it in its entirety.”
