Hannah Marshall

Great Britain
About artist / group:

Hannah Marshall extracts and invents new sounds and qualities from her instrument, the cello. She performs in groups that use scores and structures for improvisation in areas of jazz and new music. Hannah Marshall studied music at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at John Stevens’ Community Music. She makes music and sound for theatre and dance productions, and performs in various bands and theatre companies and works as a performer, composer, sound designer and puppeteer. She is continuing to extract, invent and exorcise as many sounds and emotional qualities from her instrument as she can. She has been a regular member of Alexander Hawkins’ Ensembles and has toured in Europe and South America with Luc Ex and Veryan Weston’s ensembles. She plays with Barrel, a trio with the violinist Alison Blunt and viola player Ivor Kallin, and has been invited by Fred Frith and Suichi Chino to their residencies at Café Oto in London. She also plays with Kay Grant, Tim Hodgkinson, Terry Day, Roger Turner, and the London Improvisers Orchestra.
